Get your shopping fix online
Article published Aug 4, 2003
I like to shop. What can I say? It's part of my nature to want to go out and seek something out, much like, I suppose, early man would go out in search of dinner, on the plains of the Serengetti, not in the Wal-Mart.
I love finding a bargain, and I love knowing that I probably paid what the item was actually worth, rather than what the manufacturer suggested it was worth.
That's why I think the Internet is a real revolution (in shopping).
Yeah, yeah, research is nice. Being able to get online to find out things about foreign policy as it relates to the stock market as well as cost analyses for Fortune 500 companies is all well and good for people writing research papers.
And I often have to get online to find experts on things like Zingers and Miami Ice and house paint.
And I don't think I could make it without e-mail.
But I want more. I crave interaction with my computer not to mention stores in New York and Los Angeles.
I want to shop. So I do. And I'm ruthless.
I find my favorite Web sites, spend hours at a time browsing merchandise and reading product descriptions – all without being hassled by overzealous employees trying to make a sale on commission.
Did I mention that I can do all of this at 11 p.m., after my daughter has gone to sleep and all the stores are closed anyway?
Oh, and the best thing is that I can do all of this without feeling even a little bit guilty. I always shop the baby sections and the men's stores and, of course, any and all sales, especially for shoes.
Some of my most proud consumer moments have come from finds on the Internet. I bought a book on amazon.com for 1 cent. So the shipping was 350 times the price of the book, but that just means I paid $3.51 for the whole thing. Cheaper, I'd say, than hauling it over to the bookstore, searching the shelves and having to order it anyway.
My mom tells me not to trust those sites, that I can have my identity nabbed just like my wallet was in the Metro in Paris. Well, yeah, I guess that's true, too. But, then again, my wallet could be stolen on the Metro in Paris and my credit card used to buy $500 in lingerie in the red-light district of the city.
And that really happened.
But if someone really wants to be me, car payments and mortgage and all, OK, I guess you can try it out.
But, please, if you really want to be me that badly, do it in style – find the best bargains on designer clothes and shoes online.
Meanwhile, check out some of my personal shopping faves:
* www.bluefly.com: Good for designer duds, but you must be careful about checking sizes.
* www.dutchgardens.com: Hands-down the best site for flowers, and do I need to mention the great prices?
* www.clearanceworld.com: Check the clearance section first. It rocks when you need a quick bargain fix.
* www.zappos.com : Did I mention how much I like shoes?
